Many requests are made for obituary
notices and this is a good genealogical resource, as well as
providing obits to extended family members who may not have an
original. Searching previous year obituaries (mainly prior to
2003) requires a good deal of time. If you found this to be a valuable
resource and would like to be a sponsor toward keeping the
obituaries page updated, send donations to History of
Hartford Obituaries, Emma Sefcik, 59320 62nd St, Hartford MI
49057. Since the History of Hartford website is a voluntary
effort, your contribution is much appreciated.
Email the webmaster
with any correction of obvious errors that may have
occurred in the original newspaper obit.

Cancer Claims Businessman R.A. Miller
Funeral services for
Richard A. (Dick) Miller,
48, who operated a butter and egg business here for 30 years,
were held Monday afternoon at the Calvin chapel.
Miller’s death Friday evening [August 14, 1953] ended a battle
with cancer which extended over 30 months. The struggle
began in January, 1951, when a cancerous kidney was removed.
Further hospitalization occurred as the disease progressed,
until his lungs became involved. The illness confined
Miller to bed at his home on S. Center St. for many weeks
before his death. Born at
Burlington, IA, Miller came to Hartford in 1923
at age 19 with his parents, Anthony and
Julia Miller and family, from Elkhart, Ind,
and worked at the Hartford Creamery.
When the Creamery folded in 1933, every
employee went different directions. Richard then started
the butter and egg business. He
personally conducted the enterprise until a few months ago.
For 10 years, he was prominent as a baseball player, playing
first base for Hartford, Bangor, and Benton Harbor teams.
Miller is survived by his wife, the former
Nellie Goodrich,
whom he married May 10, 1933, and three children, Jacqueline,
Judy, and Joseph, all at home. Also surviving are his
parents Anthony and Julia Miller, Sr.; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd
[Mary] Blyly, and a
brother, Anthony Jr., all of Hartford, and another brother,
Raymond, of Benton Harbor. The Rev
Alvin Jingst, pastor of the Federated Church, officiated at
the services Monday. Miss Vera Zeigenhorn sang two
numbers, "In the Garden"; and "Still Near My Soul." Many
Hartford business places were closed during the funeral hour.
Pallbearers were Dale Woolcott,
Paul Righter and Hugh Munro, Hartford; Walter Moser, Bangor;
John Yerington, Benton Harbor, and Virgil Chapman, Lawrence
Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery.
Transcribed from the
Thursday, August 20, 1953 issue of the Hartford Day Spring
with additional notes provided by Larry
Blyly, son of Lloyd and Mary Blyly in 2008.
