Two Van Buren County educators and a Decatur High School student were awarded for their achievements.

The Michigan Hispanic Caucus and Hispanic/Latino Commission awarded two Van Buren County educators in September in Lansing. From left to right, Jeff Mills, Van Buren ISD superintendent, Mike Colegio, Tonda Boothby and Robert Anderson, Van Buren ISD Board of Education.

    Margarito "Mike" Colegio, Tonda Boothby and Daisy Ortiz were honored at the 15th Annual Hispanic Heritage Recognition Event and the 18th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Dinner Sept. 24 in Lansing, according to a news release from the Hispanic/Latino Commission.
     Colegio, now retired, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his 40 years of service. He was a former employee of the Van Buren Intermediate School District in Hartford.
     Boothby, from Van Buren ISD in Paw Paw, was recognized as the Non-Hispanic Educator of the Year. She is an administrator in Van Buren county for Migrant Education and School Improvement.
     The Michigan Hispanic Caucus and Hispanic/Latino Commission recognized nine Michigan citizens in total as Outstanding Hispanic Leaders of 2013. The organization also awarded eight high school students with $1,000 scholarships.
     Ortiz, from Decatur High School, was selected from the Michigan Hispanic Caucus Essay Contest, a competitive scholarship, based on her academic achievement and a written essay.
     The Hispanic/Latino Commission is a panel of 15 people, appointed by Governor Rick Snyder, to advocate, represent and recognize Michigan’s Hispanic and Latino population, according to the news release.

NOTE – Mike Colegio and his wife, Esther, reside in and are active in the Community of Hartford.  Their daughter, Diana Colegio Rodriguez resides in Paw Paw, was Miss Hartford, and a 1991 Hartford High School graduate.
