Attacks Fatal to Philip
Smith
Philip
Smith, 71, died at midnight Tuesday at his home on the
east side of the village. He had been a victim for the
last few days of several heart attacks, one of which proved
fatal.
Born in Germany, he is survived by his wife, Pauline;
two daughters; Mrs. Olive Kenney of Riverside Cal., and Miss
Maxine Smith, at home; three sons, Walter of Benton Harbor,
George of Chicago and Phillip, Jr., Texas. Two brothers
and two sisters also survive, Peter Smith in Kansas, Henry Smith
of Michigan City, Ind., Mrs. Margaret McDonald, of Gary Ind.,
and Mrs. Katherine Hoff, Chicago.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday
from the Calvin chapel with the Rev. William F. Goltz,
officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

N. Groth Asphyxiated in Pennsylvania Cabin
Norbert George Groth, 24-year old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Groth, was killed by carbon
monoxide poisoning Thursday
night [October 1, 1947] as he slept in a Pennsylvania tourist
cabin.
Word of his death was received yesterday by his
parents, who live in the Miles District east of Hartford.
He was driving an automobile transport truck for a Lansing firm
and had completed one leg of his trip when he stopped for the
night at a cabin camp at Lewiston, Pa.
Before retiring, he turned on a gas heater in the cabin
and neglected to open a window. Lack of ventilation
resulted in his death.
A 1943 graduate of Hartford High School, Groth served
in the navy for a year in World War 11. He was a member of
Stoddard post of American Legion here and a member of the Holy
Name Society of Immaculate Conception church.
Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Henry
and Kenneth, both at home and two sisters, Rita, at home, and
Mrs. Wayne [Rose], also a Miles resident.
The body is being returned to the Calvin chapel here
tomorrow. The rosary will be recited at the chapel at 8
p.m. tomorrow and requiem high mass will be said at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at Immaculate Conception church. Burial will be
in Maple Hill cemetery.
