Constance L. Brimhall
Castor, COVERT – Constance Louise Brimhall Castor, 68, of
Covert died Dec. 31, 2001.
Memorials may be made to Covert Congregational
Church, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5. The
Rev. Duane Jones will officiate. An evening of visitation will be
held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Calvin Funeral Home,
Hartford. Burial will be in Covert Cemetery.
Connie was the eldest of four children. She moved to
Covert when she was in third grade, graduated from Covert High
School in 1951, as Valedictorian, and resided in Covert until her
death. She married Duane Castor in 1951, and had three daughters.
Connie worked in all
branches of the Van Buren State Bank. Serving as teller,
assistant comptroller, supervisor of the Covert Branch and
assistant manager of the
Hartford Branch. She retired in 1996, from the bank and was
elected that same year as Covert Township Clerk and served until she
retired in November of 2000. She held many volunteer positions
including: PTA president, 4-H Club leader, school board member,
Covert Congregational Church Sunday School Superintendent, church
treasurer, chairman of the Church Board of Directors, Girl Scout and
Brownie leader. She has been on the Alumni Committee Board and was a
member of the Rev. A.E. Grice Scholarship Fund Board of Directors.
She worked many years with
the Van Buren County Fair helped organize the Square Dance
Club Hits and Misses. She was a Mary Kay Consultant and was always
sewing, knitting and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Graham and
Inez Brimhall and her husband of 45 years, Duane E. Castor.
Survivors include: three daughters – Colleen New of Leroy, Mich.,
Lauren (Craig) VanDerveer of Coloma and Christine (Bob) Cooper of
Charlotte, Mich.; a brother, Graham "Bud" (Joyce) Brimhall of
Scottsdale, Ariz.; and sisters – Barbara Hunter of Summit, Ark., and
Marjorie "Midge" (Carlo) Combs of Portage, Mich.; 13 grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.

Richard
W. Olds, 83, of Fresno, Calif., formerly of Hartford,
passed from his life on earth to eternity in heaven on Dec. 19,2001.
Richard was born on Oct. 30, 1918, in Hartford, the son
of Don and Francis Olds.
Richard was a 1936 graduate of Hartford High School. After
graduating,
he joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1942 and won his (Pilot)
wings and officer’s commission in. October of 1943. Richard was a
pilot on the B-17 Flying Fortress "Bugs Bunny Jr." He flew 50
missions in the European theater during World War II and received
the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, the air
medal with six oak leaf clusters, the European theater ribbon with
four bronze stars, service bar, and the victory medal. Richard
married Doris Wolfington on Feb. 14, 1946. They settled in Hartford
for 10 years. They moved to California in 1956, and resided in
Fresno for the last few years with his daughter, Renee Apakarian,
her husband, Arsen, and their sons, Arsen Jr., Dave and Ken.
Doris, Richard’s wife of 55 years, passed away just a
few short weeks later in January of 2002.
A graveside service to honor his memory will be held at
11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford,
with Pastor Timothy Nyhuis officiating. Military rites will be
performed by VFW Post 1131, VFW Post 6803, American Legion Post 362,
and Auxiliary I.
In attendance at the service will be Sgt. Charles E.
Oder of North Lewisburg, Ohio, who was the top turret gunner/and
navigator of the Olds crew in England.

William E. Hall,
62, of Keeler died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at Borgess Medical
Center, Kalamazoo.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvin
Funeral Home,
Hartford, with Pastor John Yusko of
Keeler General Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in Keeler Cemetery. Visitation was held from
6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to
the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Hall was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Lawrence, the son
of Robert and Arlene (Frazier) Hall Sr. He is survived by his wife,
Marjorie, whom he married Aug. 16, 1958; two daughters–Debra Hall
of Keeler and Donna (Dan) Grice of Niles; a son, Terry (Kim) Hall of
Keeler; three grandchildren–Melissa, Amanda and William; two
great-granddaughters–Jade and Brianna; his mother, Arlene of South
Haven; and a brother, Robert Hall Jr. of
Hartford.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Hall Sr.; and a
brother, George Hall.

Dorothea Mae Streight, 90, of Ypsilanti,
formerly of Hartford, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at St. Joseph’s
Mercy Medical Center in Ypsilanti.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday,
Oct. 7, at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford with the Rev. Ron
Hansen of the Hartford United Methodist Church presiding. Friends
may visit the family from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Memorials may be
made to the Hartford Public Library, the Senior Citizen Recreational
Center, 1015 Congress North, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, or any hospice.
Mrs. Streight was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Riverside, Ill. She was a
member of the Hartford Mother’s Club and active at the Ypsilanti
Senior Center. Mrs. Streight is the widow of William Streight.
She is survived by three daughters — Mrs. Donald (Shirley) King of
Ypsilanti, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Slocum of Waterboro, S.C., and Mrs.
Ralph (Charlotte) Locke of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Shindeldecker of Hartford.

Ann L. McGriff, 75, of Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday,
September 4, 2001, at Trinity Medical Center-North Campus,
Davenport.
Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at DeRoo Funeral
Home and at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
Moline. Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home, where the Sacred Heart Alter Society recited the
Rosary at 3 p.m. and a Christian wake service was conducted at 6:30
p.m. Burial was in Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may
be made to Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley, or Alzheimer’s Association.
Mrs. McGriff was born August 16, 1926, in Bangor, the
daughter of Earl and Margaret (Stickney) Lee. She married
Robert L. McGriff on September 27, 1945, in Hartford. She was
a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Moline, member of Sacred
Heart Altar and Rosary Society; member of Short Hills and Oakwood
County clubs; and she enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include: two daughters and two
sons-in-law — (Rick) Hoag of Moline and Beth Ann (Tim) Leaf, also
of Moline; a son and daughter-in-law–Robert "Toby" (Tephanie)
McGriff of Moline; grandchildren–Robert (Monica) Campeau, Ann
Campeau, Cameron Hoag, Alex and Ben Leaf, and Heather McGriff;
sisters–Louise Engle of Hartford, Sally Lee of Hartford, Barbara
Truhn of Coloma, and Rhoda (Angelo) Ottolini of Herrin, Illinois,
and a brother, Roger Lee of Detroit. She was preceded in death
by: her husband, Robert, in May 1988; and a daughter, Joette,
in 1958.
Note: Ann was a
1944 Hartford High School graduate.

Carmeleta Melson,
71, of Hartford, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Borgess Medical
Center, Kalamazoo.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the
Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford with the Rev. Charles Davis of
the First General Baptist Church of Benton Harbor officiating.
Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery,
Hartford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Melson was born July 2, 1930, in Conway, Arkansas,
the daughter of James and Noma (Fulmer) Davidson, both of whom
preceded her in passing. She enjoyed her family, flowers and working
in her garden.
Survivors include: her husband of 43 years, Roman, whom
she married on Dec. 22, 1958; a daughter, Anita Drane of
Hartford;
a son, Jeffery (Laura) Melson of Lawrence; a daughter, Sandra (Andy)
Harrell of Livingston, Louisiana; 11 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; sisters-Shirley Crider of Quitman, Arkansas,
and Patty Rice of Houston, Texas; and special friends-Jewell Krieger
and Dawn Willming.

Murray E.
Nichols, Jr., 71, of Hartford, died July 11, 2001, at
Lakeview Continuing Care Center in Lawton.
A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday
at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, on Friday and
will be officiated by Rev. Kay David Dudding of Westminster
Presbyterian Church of Dayton. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mr. Nichols was born June 16, 1930, in Indianapolis to
Murray and Louise Nichols, Sr. He was most recently employed at
Whirlpool as a market researcher. Mr. Nichols attended Ohio State
University and graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree. While
there, he joined the ROTC program. Murray received an MBA in 1964
from Xavier University. He
served our country from June 27, 1954 to June 26, 1956 in the U.S.
Army as a second lieutenant.
Mr. Nichols continued to serve in the capacity of a loan executive
from Heath Company to the United Way in the 1980s, most recently
serving as a member of the Hartford Planning Commission from 1997
to 1998.
He loved to walk on the piers and enjoyed many
beautiful sunsets, along with his love for sailing. He most enjoyed
the 37 years of being a ham radio operator. His call letters were
W8FZU. He also enjoyed putting together televisions and ham radios
and kits from the Heath Company.
Mr. Nichols was very active in the Oakwood, Ohio,
Kiwanis Club for many years. He wrote the weekly newsletter for the
club. Murray attended 38 consecutive Indianapolis 500 races. He
loved old jazz, Fats Waller and Scott Joplin.
Survivors include his wife, Maureen Cole Nichols, whom he married
Aug. 6, 1983 in St. Joseph; his former wife, Joyce Staley Jeffery;
one son, M. Eric Nichols of S. Orange, New Jersey; one daughter,
Jennifer Day of Harper Woods, Michigan, and two grandchildren, Logan
and Jordan Nichols of Rossford, Ohio. He was preceded in death by
his mother, Louise Winston Boteler, and his father, Murray E.
Nichols, Sr.

Sharon
Bohn Rhoads, 37, of Hartford, died Monday, July 9, 2001,
as the result of an automobile accident in Walker, Michigan.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13,
at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with Pastor Tom Fuller
officiating. Graveside military rites were conducted at Maple Hill
Cemetery,
Hartford, by American Legion Post 362 and Auxiliary, VFW Post
6803, VFW Post 1137, and American Legion Stoddard Post 93.
Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral
home. Memorial contributions may be made to the trust fund for her
children.
She was born December 22, 1963, in Benton Harbor, the
daughter of Harold and Jane (Johnson) Bohn. She was
a Navy veteran and a
member of AMVETS of South Bend, Indiana; and the American Legion of
Grand Rapids.
Survivors include: a daughter,
Heather Rhoads of
Hartford;
a son, D.J. Rhoads, also of Hartford; her parents, Jane and Harold
Bohn of
Hartford; a sister, Brenda (Bobby) Reznicek of St. Joseph;
two brothers–Buster (Dee) Bohn of Decatur and Harold (Shelly) Bohn
Jr. of
Hartford; two nieces, Amanda and Gabrielle; and a nephew,
Jarrett. She was preceded in death by: a brother, Teddy Johnson, in
1987; her grandfather, William Bohn, in 1993; and her grandmother,
Vivian Johnson, in 1994.

Susan
Cartwright, 69, of
Hartford,
died Monday, July 2, 2001, at home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 5,
at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet. Burial was in Fairview
Memorial Cemetery, Watervliet. Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice.
Mrs. Cartwright was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Watervliet,
to William and Helen (Healy) Howley. She was a life member of the
Stoddard American Legion Post 93 of
Hartford.
Survivors include: her husband, Gordon; two sons–Chuck
(Lynn) Cartwright of Hartford and Bill (Carol) Cartwright of
Lawrence; a daughter-in-law, Linda Cartwright of Watervliet; 11
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters –Louise
(Kenny) Jacobs of Hartford and Margaret Michaelson and her long-time
friend, Shirley, both of Grand Rapids. She was preceded in death by:
her parents; two sons–James Louie and Terry; three sisters; and
three brothers.

Jeanne
Carmen Knapp, 78, of
Hartford,
died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Bronson Methodist Hospital,
Kalamazoo.
Funeral services were held at noon on Tuesday, June 26, at Calvin
Funeral Home, Hartford, with the Rev. Ron Hansen of
Hartford
United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill
Cemetery,
Hartford. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of
service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
be made to the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Knapp was born July 16, 1922, in
Hartford,
the daughter of Charles and Weltha (Smith) Goodrich. She had owned
and operated Jeanne’s Beauty Shop in
Hartford
for more than 40 years and loved to work in her garden.
Survivors include: a daughter, Vicki (William) Mach of
Hartford;
two grandchildren–Mindi (Brian) Mach-May of St. Joseph and Rodney
Mach of Ypsilanti; three sisters — Nellie (Max) Moses of Lawrence,
Joyce (Russell) Kime of St. Joseph, and Joanne (Roger) Duncombe of
Hartford;
a brother, Robert F. Goodrich of Hartford; and numerous nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband,
Wesley, on December 31, 1996; and three sisters–Cecile Ackerson,
Mildred Boynton, and Helen Hones.

Boyd
Kenneth Hover, 88, of Waterford, Michigan, formerly of
Hartford,
died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Canterbury On-The-Lake in Waterford.
Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July
14, at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with the Rev. Ron Hansen of
Hartford
United Methodist Church officiating. Florida-Coffinbury Lodge 309
F&AM, of which he was a life member, conducted Masonic services as
part of the memorial service. Burial of cremains will take place at
a later date in Hill Cemetery, Lawrence. Memorials may be made to
the donor’s choice.
Mr. Hover was born June 24, 1913, in Arlington
Township, Michigan, the son of Clyde and Florence (Horton) Hover. He
retired in 1973, after 42
years of managing A&P Stores in Hartford, Benton Harbor, and
Dowagiac.
Survivors include: two daughters–JoAnn (Brian) Boyle
of Waterford and Susan (Edward) Ewald of Rock Hills, South Carolina;
six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by: his parents; his wife, Edith, on October 3, 1992; a
sister, Mildred; and two brothers, Cecil and Lyle.

Herbert F.
Getz Sr., 68, of Weaverville, North Carolina, formerly of
Coloma, died at his home on Sunday, June 17, 2001, surrounded by
family members.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 20, at Gus
Ledord Cemetery, Bald Mountain Community, Yancey County, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O.
Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
Mr. Getz was born the fifth of six children on February 13, 1933, to
August and Marguerite Getz in Hartford. He moved to North Carolina in
1984. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of the Korean War; an Elder of the Pokagon Band
of Potawatomi Indians; and retiree of Clark Equipment Company of
Benton Harbor and Arden, North Carolina. He loved hunting, fishing,
gardening, and taking "shortcuts" to any destination.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 16 years, Mable
Ledford Getz; one son, Herbert (Debbie) Getz Jr. of Coloma; six
daughters–Terri Raich of Kalamazoo, Kathy (Scott) Fodness of South
Bend, Indiana, Carla Getz (Roger King) of Sodus, Kim (John) Savage
of Phoenix, Arizona, Terry (Dan) Cronin and Veronica Burrell of
Weaverville, North Carolina; six grandchildren–Ashley, Audrey,
Tyler, Danny, Lauren, and Christopher; and a host of other family
members and friends.

Kathryn M.
Willer,
79, of Hartford died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Lakeland
Hospital, St. Joseph, after a short illness.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, May 30, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,
Hartford, with Father German Perez-Diaz as celebrant. Burial
will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Visitation will be
held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Calvin Funeral Home,
Hartford. Memorials may be made to the Hartford Library or
Hartford Fire Department.
Mrs.
Willer was born Aug. 4, 1921, in
Tolleston, Ind., the daughter
of Jacob and Louise Schweitzer. She was a past member of
American Legion Stoddard Post 93 Auxiliary; past member of Child
Care Club of Hartford and present member of the Lawrence Senior
Citizens Club.
Survivors include:
sons, Eugene Willer Jr. and friend,
Gia Bartlett of Grants,
N.M., and Kenneth (Linda) Willer of Hartford; granddaughter,
Bobbie (Gregg) Smithley of Hartford; grandson, Kyle
Willer of
Kentwood, Mich.; great-granddaughter, Toni
Smithley of Hartford;
two great-grandsons; Tyler Smithley and Brier
Smithley, both of
Hartford; and a sister, Bertha (Art) Rask of Oak Lawn, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene
Willer Sr., on
June 19, 1972; a daughter, Pamela Lynne
Willer, on Sept. 2,
1969; and a sister, Mary Schweitzer, on Sept. 24, 1923.

David K.
Ulrath, 60, of Bangor passed away quietly at his home on April 9,
2001. His wife, Mary and son, David R. had been caring for him
during his recent illness.
He will be missed by his family which includes his wife, Mary, and
his children, David R.; Kerry, Brenda, Don and Teri; eight
grandchildren; one great-grandson; and his sister, Mona.
He was preceded in passing by his daughter,
Renea, in 1981; his
parents; and a brother, Ronald.
David was born July 12, 1940 in Bangor, the son of Ronald and
Harriett Deisch Ulrath.
He was an Army veteran.
Family and friends will gather on Monday, April 16, at Calvin
Funeral Home, Hartford for an 11 a.m. graveside service at Maple
Hill Cemetery, where Pastor Greg Timmins will officiate and the
Wilcox-Eastman-Salinas American Legion Post will conduct military
rites. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15,
at the funeral home. The family requests donations be made to
Hartford Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Wilma Jean
Strong, 72, of Brethren, Michigan, former area resident,
died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Manistee Medical Care Facility in
Manistee.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday,
April 10, at Terwilliger Funeral Home, Kaleva, with the Rev. Floyd
Soper officiating. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until
the time of service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Strong was born March 10, 1929, in
Hartford,
the daughter of June D. and Lily Gay. She retired from Community
Hospital, Watervliet, where she had been a licensed practical nurse.
On January 2, 1949, she married Harvey John Strong in Watervliet.
She enjoyed gardening flowers and plants, crocheting, and spending
time with her family.
Survivors include: two daughters–Connie McCumber of
Brethren and Catherine (David) Baldwin of Coloma; four sons–John
(Peggy) Strong of Hartford, Ronald Strong of Louisiana,
Patrick Strong of Arkansas, and Timothy Strong of Brethren; six
grandchildren–Michael McCumber, Christine Baldwin, Brian Baldwin,
Danielle Strong, Justin Woods, and Anthony Woods; two
great-grandchildren–Connor McCumber and Christine Woods; and
numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her
husband, Harvey, on June 12, 1981; her brother, Lewis Gay, during
childhood; and two sisters–Annie Chidester and Maxine Tomsa.
NOTE: Wilma was
a
1949 Hartford High School graduate.

Josephine
Rdzak, 80, of
Hartford,
died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Lake View Continuing Care Center,
Lawton.
As to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a
private family service will be held at a later date, with burial of
cremains in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Calvin Funeral Home,
Hartford,
is in charge of the arrangements. Anyone wishing to make memorial
contributions may do so to the Michigan Chapter of the Multiple
Sclerosis Society.
Mrs. Rdzak was born October 14, 1920, in Chicago,
Illinois, the daughter of Sergey and Katherine (Gajda) Pradon. She
was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of
Hartford.
Survivors include: a daughter, Patricia (Robert) Martin
of Hartford;
a grandson, Brian Martin of Ann Arbor; a sister, Mary Miller of
Hartford;
two brothers–Donald (Mona) Pradon of
Hartford
and Paul (Donna) Pradon, also of Hartford; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband,
Frank Rdzak in 1960; two sisters–Anne Pleyer and Eleanor Wilkens;
and a brother, George Pradon.

Virginia C. Chestnut,
Allegan, MI, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Metron of Allegan.
Mrs. Chestnut was born January 12, 1921 in Hartford, MI
the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Siebengartner) Smith. Mrs.
Chestnut and her late husband were very active in the state and
national Holstein Associations and the Allegan County Fair. She
enjoyed working on the farm and was happiest when she was mowing
lawn.
Surviving are 3 children and their spouses, Charles &
Jane Chestnut of Williamston, Jimmie & Jo Ann Chestnut of Allegan,
Harry & Janis Chestnut of Allegan, 9 grandchildren, 7 great
grandchildren, 1 brother-in-law, Glen & Audry Chestnut of Kansas, 2
nieces, Sue & Mike Gibbs of Gobles, Karen & Phil Boyer of Gobles.

be held Saturday 11:00 am at Mallory Cemetery, Trowbridge Township,
Pastor Gail Pike officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to
Heartland Hospice or the ALS Association. Arrangements by Gorden

Lathal D. (Tiny)
Young Sr., 67, of Hartford, died at 1 a.m. Thursday,
February 8, 2001, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.
14, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, with the Rev. Johan Abrahams
officiating. Burial was in New Troy Cemetery, Weesaw Township.
Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral
home.
Mr. Young was born October 30, 1933, in Bolivar,
Tennessee. He had previously lived in Benton Harbor and for the past
23 years had lived in Hartford. He retired from maintenance
with the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph Sanitation Department.
Survivors include: his mother, Lucille Young; the
mother of his children, Laureen (Young) Christopher; two sons–Lathal
D. (Pamela) Young Jr. and Lonnie Young, all of New Troy; a daughter,
Cheryl Young of Bridgman; sisters–Annette Sheldon and Bunny Young,
both of New Troy; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a
special friend, Linda L. Minton; her daughter, Kelly Jo (Tony)
Glassnor; and her granddaughter, Chelsea L. Glassnor, all of
Hartford.
He was preceded in death by his brother.

Kenneth Irwin Passot,
74, of Hartford, died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Borgess Medical
Center, Kalamazoo.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the
Church of Jesus Christ,
Hartford, with the
Rev. Richard Thacker Jr. officiating. Burial was in EverRest
Memorial Park, Kalamazoo. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Church of Jesus Christ. Calvin Funeral Home,
Hartford, was in
charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Passot was born May 30, 1920, to John and Vivian (Neilsen)
Passot in Chicago, Illinois.
He served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II
and married Clara Kruizenga on Jan. 21, 1954. He retired from
Burlington North-ern Railroad after 30 years of service.
Survivors include: his wife, Clara, of
Hartford; a
daughter, Linda (James) Beattie of Decatur; two grandchildren–Stephany
and Matthew Beattie of Decatur; and a brother, Elden Passot of
Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Vivian (Neilsen)
Passot.

Victor Lawrence “Larry”
Knapp, 65, of Michigan City and Crown Point [Indiana],
died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) in Tucson [Arizona].
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 7, at First United Methodist Church, Michigan City.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the
church. Geisne Funeral Home, Crown Point, is handling the
arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Knapp; two daughters,
Laura (the Rev. Paul) Anderson, Crown Point, and Monica (Dennis)
Pearson, Hebron, Ind.; two sons, Craig (Kathy) Knapp, Michigan City,
and Todd (Dawn) Knapp, Carmel, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Joey, John
and Emily Anderson, Eric and Zachary Knapp, and Katie, Abby and Evan
Pearson; one brother, Phil (Margaret) Knapp, Traverse City, Mich.;
and two sisters, Martha Smith, Paw Paw, Mich., and JoAnn (Jim)
Evans, Lawrence, Mich.
Mr. Knapp was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Michigan City. He retired from State Farm Insurance. He was
a member of the Exchange and Elks clubs in Michigan City.

Michigan City, the American Heart Association or the American Lung
Society.

Bryan E.
Jarvis, 79, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Keeler, died
Friday, January 19, 2001, in Mesa, at the home of his daughter, with
whom he resided.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan.
25, at Allred Funeral Home, Berrien Springs. Burial will follow in
Keeler Cemetery, after which a reception will be held at the
American Legion Hall in Berrien Springs. Friends may visit with the
family from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may
be made to the Children’s Cancer Center at Phoenix Children’s
Hospital, 1300 N. 12th Street, Suite 404, Phoenix, AZ 85006.
Mr. Jarvis was born May 16, 1921, in Benton Harbor, the
son of W.J. Bryan and Ida M. (Ginzl) Jarvis. He was a graduate of
Benton Harbor High School. During the term his father served as
Michigan State Representative (1937-1938), Bryan was a page in the
House of Representatives. He was active in the Democratic Party and
ran for County Clerk in 1956,
owned B & J Mobile Home Park
in Hartford,
was a painter and decorator, served as President of the Painters
Union Local 1396 for 10 years and business agent for five years, was
a fruit farmer for 45 years, and a member of the Elks Club and Moose
Lodge.
Survivors include: his daughter, Susan (Robert Orr)
Jarvis-Orr; three grandsons–Brandyn, Kaelyn and Devyn Orr, all of
Mesa; a brother, Charles R. (Mary) Jarvis of Dowagiac; a sister,
Ella E. (Oscar) Stubelt of St. Joseph; nine nieces and nephews; and
many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by: a
son, John W., in 1965; his mother, Ida M., in 1992; his father, W.J.
Bryan, in 1993; and two sisters–Reta M. Radtke Sells in 1991 and
Marie A. Schmaltz in 1992.

Charles
Loran Bunn, 78, of Lawrence, died
Monday, January 15, 2001, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Calvin
Funeral Home, Hartford, with his grandson, Bob Gendron,
officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery,
Hartford.
Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the World War II Memorial or
to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Mr. Bunn was born September 6, 1922, in McKenzie,
Tennessee, the son of Charlie and Gladis (Thompson) Bunn. He retired
from Watervliet Paper Company in 1981; was an
Army veteran of World War II;
and a member of Hess-Eastman American Legion Post 174, who conducted
graveside military rites.
Survivors include: a son, Jerry (Tracy) Bunn of Gig
Harbor, Washington; a daughter, Peggy (Duane) Winans of
Hartford;
a son, James (Mary) Bunn of Keeler; a daughter, Deborah Bunn-Johnson
of Hartford;
12 grandchildren; 26 great-grand-children; brothers–Wayne Bunn of
Hartford
and Joe (Janet) Bunn of Belview, Florida; and a sister, Betty
(Jerry) Steenwyk of Hartford. He was preceded in death by:
his wife of 63 years, Reba, on April 4, 2000; and his parents,
Charlie and Gladis Bunn.

Maxine
Cook Hilliah, 92, of Hartford, died Friday, January 12, 2001,
at South Haven Healthcare Centre, South Haven.
There will be no visitation, as per her wishes.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7:00
p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Hartford Federated Church, where she
attended, with Pastor Timothy Nyhuis officiating. Burial will be at
a later date in Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes
donations be made to the church.
Mrs. Hilliah was born September 4, 1908, in Lawrence,
the daughter of Russell and Maude (Shafer) Cook. She was a member of
the Shafer Lake Stitch and Chat Club and loved to farm and garden.
Survivors include: a sister, Esther Mottinger of
Boardman, Ohio; two brothers–Martin Stoddard of Decatur and Clinton
(Myrtle) Stoddard of Hartford; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Frank, on February 28,
1978; her parents, Russell and Maude (Shafer) Cook; four
sisters–Ruth Kabine, Ressa Cook, Donna Cook, and Milicent Davis;
and a brother, Russell Cook Jr.
Note: Maxine
was a 1925 graduate of Hartford High School.

Laure E.
Hafer, 82, of Hartford, died Thursday, January 11,
2001, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Florida.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January
27, from noon until 2 p.m. at Hartford United Methodist Church,
Hartford.
The family is being served by Calvin Funeral Home,
Hartford.
Mrs. Hafer was born on December 8, 1918, in
Hartford,
the daughter of LeRoy and Ethel (Bratton) Kime, both of whom
preceded her in death. She formerly owned and operated the
Hartford
Greenhouse. She also had been a receptionist for Dr. Palmer, a local
telephone operator, teacher in the Bangor school system for 10
years, member of several square dance clubs, and helped serve at the
senior citizens luncheons. She received an associate of arts
degree from Lake Michigan College and both her bachelor of science
and master of arts degrees from Western Michigan University.
Survivors include: two sons–Charles (Elizabeth) Hafer
of Hartford
and Laurence Hafer of Watervliet; grandchildren–Cindee Hafer, Ryan
Hafer, and Bryan Hafer; step-grandchildren–Mike Evett, Lori Motrey,
Michelle Pensinger, and Jamie Commissaris; four great-grandchildren;
and a brother, Russell (Joyce) Kime of St. Joseph. Besides her
parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Charles O. Hafer;
and a sister, Frances Kime.
Note: Laure was
a
1936 graduate of Hartford High School.

Tonda Lynn
Cotman, 39, of Hartford, died
gracefully at her home on Tuesday, January 9, 2001, among family and
friends, after a long and courageous battle against diabetes.
A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan.
15, at United Methodist Church, Hartford, for her family and friends.
Memorials may be made to Hospice; the Diabetes Association; or
Tonda’s daughter, Senica.
Tonda was born April 2, 1961, in Watervliet and had
lived the remainder of her life in
Hartford.
She will be remembered for her wonderful personality and
quick-witted sense of humor. She was especially proud of her
daughter, Senica, and granddaughter, Zoe.
Survivors include: her daughter, Senica Cotman (Bob
Smith) of Watervliet; her granddaughter, Zoe Smith of Watervliet;
her mother, Marilyn Cotman (Terry Ridge) of
Hartford;
sister, Jackie Cotman of Bainbridge Township; brother, Chip Cotman
of Michigan City, Indiana; sister, Kelly Cotman of Bainbridge
Township; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by: her
father, Robert ("George") Cotman; her grandparents–Mr. and Mrs.
Horace Lloyd and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cotman; her aunt, Lucy Cotman;
and Senica’s father, Donnie Tate.
