Please email the webmaster if you have obituaries of people who have lived in Hartford Michigan, or was active in the Hartford community, at some time during their lives. To find a specific obituary, use the  Search Our Site  feature, also located on the left menu of every page.  The Obituary section was started January 30, 2008 and current obituaries will be posted as they become available.  Obituaries are from the local newspapers, unless otherwise noted.  If you have an obituary notice (or learn of the passing away of someone who lived in Hartford at one time) of a former Hartford resident from a newspaper away from the Hartford area, please send it. Past obituaries will be added as time permits.  Death notices are also posted in the HHS graduate database.

Many requests are made for obituary notices and this is a good genealogical resource, as well as providing obits to extended family members who may not have an original.  Searching previous year obituaries (mainly prior to 2003) requires a good deal of time.  If you found this to be a valuable resource and would like to be a sponsor toward keeping the obituaries page updated, send donations to History of Hartford Obituaries, Emma Sefcik, 59320 62nd St, Hartford MI  49057.  Since the History of Hartford website is a voluntary effort, your contribution is much appreciated.

Email the webmaster with any correction of obvious errors that may have occurred in the original newspaper obit.

H.L. Gifford,
Blacksmith For
Fifty Years, Dies

Stricken With Fatal Heart
Attack While Doing Chores
At His Village Home

Victim of a sudden heart attack while feeding his chickens at his North Center street home about five o’clock Wednesday [December 7, 1938] afternoon, Hollan L, Gifford, 84, for 40 years a Hartford blacksmith and wagonmaker, dropped dead in his dooryard.
His body was found by members of the household who went to look for him when he failed to return promptly.
Funeral rites for him were held at the Zuver & Calvin chapel Saturday afternoon, the Rev, John H. Balfour of Imlay City, a former pastor here, officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery beside the grave of his wife, the former Mary E. Murphey, to whom he was married in Plainwell in 1878 and who died at the home here on December 17, 1932.
Mr, Gifford was born [September 24, 1854] in Lorain, N.Y., but came to Michigan with his parents when he was 11 years of age. The family settled at Lansing but later removed to Plainwell.
The veteran blacksmith operated a shop at Lawrence for two years before he came to Hartford 45 years ago and acquired a blacksmith and wagon shop on North Center street which he operated for 40 years. He retired a few years ago, but had continued in good health, working about his home and being a familiar figure on the streets.  He was long and active member of the local Odd Fellow lodge.
Surviving him are two sons and a daughter. They are Guy Gifford, president of the Kirchen & Gifford company of Hartford and member of the village council, Mrs. Bird Gleason of Benton Harbor and Monroe Gifford of Ensign, Mich, another daughter, Maude, died many years ago at the age of 15.  He also leaves two grandsons, Lee and Harlan Gifford, and a great grandson, Charles Gifford, all of Hartford.

John E. Peterson was born January 13, 1859, in Danville, Illinois, and died May 27, 1938, at the age of 79.
The first years of his wife were spent at Danville and then his family moved in a covered wagon to South Haven,
Michigan. The new home was in virgin timber, but they were true pioneers and knew all of the prevations and hardships that fall on such. On April 11, 1895, he married Miss Florence J. Mattice of Coloma, Michigan. To them were born four children, three of whom are still living. Laura May was born October 11, 1896, and died September 11, 1899; Ralph M. was born November 9, 1901 and Harold J. and Herbert R. were born July 29, 1904.
The family then left South Haven and spent a short time in New Mexico, Illinois, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Galesburg, Michigan. Leaving Galesburg in the Spring of 1913 they came to Beaverton and have lived here since except for six months in 1920 spent in Hartford, Michigan. Mr. Peterson was an inverate farmer and was happiest when engaged in planting gardens, farm corps and trees, and watching them grow and come to fruit.
He belonged to no church but was always loyal to his family and friends and tried to bear with those who disagreed. He was buried in Lakeview cemetery in the city of South Haven overlooking that beautiful body of water named after the Commonwealth he loved so well.
His wife, Florence, and his sons, Ralph an Herbert, live on the farm three miles southeast of Beaverton. Harold, his wife and little daughter live at 645 Piper St., Flint. He leaves one niece, Mrs. May Rich, of South Haven, and a host of friends.
