Hartford Lady Dies At Family
Christmas Fete
Mrs. Henry Webster,
61, Was Fatally Stricken at Daughter’s Home in South Haven.
Stricken with apoplexy while standing with a happy
family group about a Christmas tree at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Marian Slentz, at South Haven on Christmas night,
Mrs.
Melinda
Ellen Webster of Hartford, aged 61, wife of
Henry Webster, died early Friday morning without regaining
consciousness.
Her sudden illness and death were the tragic ending of
Christmas festivities, for which Mr. and Mrs. Webster had gone
to the daughter’s home in South Haven. Her body was brought to
Hartford early Friday morning and taken to the family home on
Linden street.
Funeral rites for her were held at the Zuver & Calvin
chapel Monday forenoon. Rev. John W. Broxholm officiating,
and interment was at Maple Hill.
Born September 25, 1869, in Arlington township, the
daughter of James and Melinda Washburn, pioneer farmers there,
Mrs. Webster had spent her entire life in Van Buren county.
Her death on December 26, 1939, made her span of life 61 years,
three months and one day. She was one of a family of ten
children. Known to her childhood playmates as Nellie, the
name had followed her through life.
In June, 1887, she was married to Dayton C. Pierson, of
Arlington township. Two children were born to them, Zella
E. and Vera Ellen. Mr. Pierson died February 10, 1893.
On May 5, 1900, she was married to Henry Webster and took up her
residence at his farm northeast of Hartford, where they resided
until 1913 when the moved to this village. To this union
four daughters were born, Myrtle M., Marian F., Evelyn C. and
Mildred L.
Mrs. Webster’s kindly, cheerful disposition endeared
her to family and friends, among whom her death occasioned
keenest grief. She was a member of the local Methodist
Episcopal church.
Surviving are here husband, six daughters, Mrs. Zella
H. Holt of Lansing, Mrs. Vera Baker of Oshtemo, Mrs. Myrtle
Plastridge of Williamantic, Conn., Mrs. Marian Slentz and Mrs.
Evelyn Bennett of South Haven, and Mrs. Mildred at home, besides
four step-children, Frank W. Webster of Hartford, Ora Webster of
Dowagiac, Miss Hazel Webster of Benton Harbor, and Leo Webster
of South Bend; two sisters, Mrs. Mildren Knapp of Bangor and
Mrs. Florence Dell of Paw Paw; two brothers, William and John
Washburn of Paw Paw; twenty grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
